What career opportunities await a nurse with a DNP degree?
- NPs diagnose and treat a broad range of health problems while emphasizing health promotion and disease prevention, education, and counseling.
- NPs practice both autonomously and in collaboration with other health care providers in ambulatory, acute, outpatient, community, primary, and long-term care settings.
- NPs in rural areas often are important to avoiding unnecessary hospitalizations through crisis intervention, chronic illness management, consultation and ambulatory care.
- NPs in Montana practice independently and have full prescriptive authority.
What certifications are possible?
- DNP graduates take a national exam to earn board certification. MSU prepares graduates in one of two areas:
- Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP): provide high quality healthcare to individuals and families across the life span, from infants to geriatric patients.
- Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP): provide treatment of psychiatric-mental health disorders to individuals and families across the lifespan.
- Post Graduate Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner Certificate (pending approval)

Am I eligible to apply for a DNP?
- Yes, a BSN-prepared nurse can apply to the BSN-DNP option.
- Yes, a MN-prepared nurse can apply to the Post-Masters DNP option.
What else do I need to know about the MSU DNP program?
- Fully accredited
- Offered primarily as distance learning; 675 clinical hours arranged in a variety of locales
- Total of 83 credits that can be completed in full or part time status (5-12 credits/semester) Graduate Degree
